With its sequel due out this summer, now is a perfect time to revisit the 2012 surprise hit Pitch Perfect and look at its lasting impact. No, it’s not just a silly, irreverent look at the acappella world that uses dry humor and Anna Kendrick to appeal to a huge audience. Only simpletons think that.

No, it’s actually one of the most brilliant uses of subtext of our time, a cinematic masterpiece that takes music and lyrics and repurposes them to broadcast a clear message: this is a film “about, and in protest against, 9/11.”

This delightfully insane unpacking of Pitch Perfect is a must for fans of the movie, Kendrick, and even Stanley Kubrick (you’ll see why). Whether you take the video seriously or not-and you probably shouldn't-you’ll never be able to listen to “Turn the Beat Around” quite the same way ever again.
