For how much Oscar buzz as Steve Carell is getting for his performance as John du Pont in Foxcatcher, it’s easy to forget that du Pont was very much a real person. There’s something deeply unsettling about watching this report on him from 1988, when his Foxcatcher Farm served as the training ground for Olympic wrestling hopefuls Dave and Mark Schultz.

The footage is made all the creepier because you know that simmering just beneath the surface was a deeply disturbed individual who a few years later would murder David Schultz as du Pont became totally unhinged. He died in 2010 while serving his 13 to 30 year sentence for the killing.
