The Republicans Have Taken Control of the Senate

Republicans have gained enough additional seats to take control of the U.S. Senate.

It happened. The results seemed inevitable for much of the campaign season, but now the Republicans have officially taken control of the Senate. With the House securely in hand, the GOP has already taken the six additional seats necessary to reach a Senate majority. West Virginia, Montana, Colorado, Arkansas, South Dakota and North Carolina have all switched from blue to red.

This marks the first time Republicans have controlled both the Senate and the House since 2007. Control of the House has stayed with the GOP since 2011.

From here on out we're just watching election results to see how much more control the Republicans can gain.
