There’s a reason that Ebola isn’t really a thing in the U.S. anymore, and TIME Magazine knows it. That’s why they have named “The Ebola Fighters” as their annual Person of the Year, defeating a slew of other contenders ranging from Taylor Swift to Roger Goodell to Mark Zuckerberg.
“The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight,” writes TIME Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs in the accompanying article. “For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defenses, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are TIME’s 2014 Person of the Year.”
Ebola has been virtually eradicated in the United States, and indeed never really took hold due to how quickly and smartly these “Ebola Fighters” acted. While the battle with the deadly disease continues in Western Africa, these brave men and women continue to do everything they can to save as many lives as possible.
The four runners up are quite the interesting group who seemingly share very little in common:

- Vladimir Putin
- Alibaba founder Jack Ma
- Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani
