Better Call Saul begins in less than two weeks, but for a while it didn’t look like it was going to happen at all.

Bob Odenkirk—who plays the titular lawyer—told New York Magazine that he was initially going to pass on the project. He didn’t have the interest or energy to spend four and a half months in Albuquerque, N.M. shooting the show while his wife and kids remained back in Los Angeles. But when his kids told him to go ahead and do the show anyway, Odenkirk eventually caved.

Now, Odenkirk must deal with the pressure and expectations that come with leading a show. It’s his first time ever in a starring role, and the experience has been entirely new. For one thing, there’s a ton of work to be done before shooting starts. “I’d start planning how I was gonna attack it,” he said, “what days I was learning my lines and really running them hard, what scenes I had to learn first and brush up on through the week.”

With the show so close, new fans and Breaking Bad loyalists alike are all eager to find out if this questionable spinoff can actually work.
