The sequel to Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is one major step closer to pre-production 33 years after the original changed the Sci-Fi landscape. Harrison Ford is confirmed to reprise his role as Rick Deckard and principle photography is set to begin next summer. Scott will not be reclaiming the director's chair, but has signed on as executive producer.

Negotiations are in the process of securing a replacement for Scott, and all signs are pointing to Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve has established himself as a master of tension, mood and atmosphere with Prisoners and Enemy (both led by Jake Gyllenhaal), so it should be exciting to see how the director brings those elements to a futuristic universe. The Blade Runner sequel will be set decades after where the 1982 original concluded.

It would be dope if Villeneuve managed to bring his frequent collaborator Gyllenhaal, who is currently having an incredible career renaissance, into the fold. Stay tuned.
