Emma Watson Really Likes Steve Carell

Knowing that he probably wouldn't get to give an acceptance speech, Steve Carell let his cufflinks do the talking for him. And Emma Watson noticed.

Have the Oscars gone back to being a place to take social justice stands? Between Common, John Legend, Graham Moore, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Patricia Arquette's speeches it seems so. Those stars talked about unity, disenfranchisement through the prison industrial complex, suicide, immigration, and wage equality (but Patty was the only one to flub it backstage).

Steve Carell was just happy to be there. Nominated for Best Actor for Foxcatcher, Carell was probably the least likely of all the leading actors to go home with the trophy. He even obliged to be a part of one of the many thudding Neil Patrick Harris jokes (Harris thought that Carell was a seat-filler for a real star). In contrast to the #askhermore campaign (to ask women about more things than what they're wearing on the red carpet), Carell let his cufflinks do the talking for him. And his cause is the one that Emma Watson promotes: HeForShe gender equality.

HeForShe aims to bring together “one half of humanity [men] in support of the other half of humanity [women], for the benefit of all.”

Watson wasn't at the Oscars, but she noticed the links, and she sent the Oscar nominee a note. If you can't read her handwriting (above), here's an expert transcription:

Dear Steve Carell,

You were pure genius in Little Miss Sunshine (one of my all time favourite films), my brother became obsessed with you after Anchorman, I wanted to marry you or have you adopt me after Crazy, Stupid, Love, I hated that guy you played in The Way Way Back, and then you were mind-blowing in Foxcatcher. I think you’re so awesome and today you are wearing ‪#‎HeForShe‬ Monique Péan cufflinks at the Oscars to support Gender Equality. Couldn’t be more proud! THANK YOU.

Love,

Emma x

Notice the marriage proposal? Last week, Watson denied dating Prince Harry, but there's a roadblock: Carell has been married since 1995. Watson was five years old then. Girlish dreams!
