For all the fun we're having with Empire we could be getting an even better hip-hop series next year thanks to Netflix. The streaming service has ordered 13 episodes of The Get Down, a series set in late 70s New York City when hip-hop and punk music exploded alongside crime, violence, and urban decay. At the center of the show will be a group of "crafty" teenagers from the South Bronx.
Executive producer Baz Luhrmann, who directed The Great Gatsby, says he's been working on the show's concept for ten years. Shawn Ryan from The Shield will also be an executive producer.
"I’ve been obsessed with the idea of how a city in its lowest moment, forgotten and half destroyed, could give birth to such creativity and originality in music, art and culture," Luhrmann said. "I’m thrilled to be working with my partners at Sony and collaborating with a team of extraordinary writers and musicians, many of whom grew up with and lived the story we’ve set out to tell."
