American Sniper officially became the highest grossing domestic release of 2014 this weekend, passing The Hunger Games: Mockingjay with a total North American take of $337.2 million and growing, Variety reports.

The movie already surpassed Saving Private Ryan to become the highest grossing war movie of all time, and it looks like its on track to pass The Passion of the Christ as the highest-grossing R-rated release ever.

In new releases, it was a bad weekend all around at the box office, according to the studios' Sunday morning estimates. Chappie was No. 1 with a weak opening of only $13.3 million, which was way below what the studio had predicted.

The weekend's big comedy release, Unfinished Business, starring Vince Vaughn and Dave Franco, flopped hard with only  $4.8 million to open in 10th place, marking the latest in a string of box office disappointments for Vaughn.

No. 2 was Will Smith's Focus, which added $10 million in its second week of release, followed by The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ($8.6 million) and Kingsman: The Secret Service ($8.3 million).
