24-Hour Party People: Drugs Are Legal in Ireland Until Thursday

Ireland's 1977 Misuse of Drugs Act was found unconstitutional by the Irish Court of Appeal on Tuesday morning, but there was a loophole in the legislation.

Drugs are legal in Ireland! No, it isn't a St. Patrick's Day miracle, it's a weird loophole in legislation that made possession of more than 100 substances legal until the next legislation goes into effect. But just like any Cinderella story, this fairytale ball will only last until tomorrow at midnight—when anyone caught in possession of ecstasy, ketamine, crystal meth, and other substances after 12:01am—could again be arrested.

What made this come to pass? Ireland's 1977 Misuse of Drugs Act was declared unconstitutional by the Irish Court of Appeal on Tuesday morning—meaning that all the drugs currently prohibited in it are legal. Emergency laws will be passed later today, but the earliest that they could be put into effect will be Thursday at the disco-ball drop of midnight.

Speaking to reporters today, Health Minister Leo Varadkar explained to The Journal: “It is still the case that the sale, supply, export or import of such substances remains illegal, even now today.” It's possession of the 24-hour legal highs that is currently a free for all. So open wide, grab your glows and gloves, and go meet your destiny.
