Orange is the New Black was the new hot show back in October 2013, and we have no doubt it inspired countless Halloween costmes. Julianne Hough loved the Netflix series so much she went as one of its characters—not her doppelganger Piper, but Crazy Eyes, played by African-American actress Uzo Aduba. Her costume even included blackface (though it seemed more like a very extreme spray-on tan), which critics were quick to point out was um, hello, not OK.
In a new interview with Allure, Hough says she learned the hard way it wasn't the best idea. "Ignorance is sometimes not bliss…It was all out of fun and respect for the character," she said. "I don't even know how to talk about it because it's such a sensitive topic. It makes me so sad to think that I was that dumb. I learned a big lesson."
