Kevin Smith once threatened to retire, but now he's in fuck it mode. He's gonna keep making movies with his own toys. Yesterday the Jersey-lovin'-filmmaking-nerd announced that he was making a third Clerks film; he also tweeted an allusion ("I smell a rat [in 2016]") to making a Mallrats sequel in 2016.

In an interview with a Tucson radio station, Smith today confirmed that Mallrats 2 is indeed on his plate. "Lately I've been doing this thing where I’m like ‘Do you want to do what’s good for your career or do you just want to have fun?," Smith told KFMA Rock 102. "Nobody’s clamoring for a Mallrats sequel, but I would love to make one. It’s been like 20 years.” Smith told the station that he's written about half of a Mallrats 2 script, and that he aims to start shooting in May 2016.

Like the sexploitation filmmakers of old, Smith is planning on shooting four movies over the next 12 months. And half of those will have numbers or numerals after the title. Truly about nothing, Mallrats starred Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Jason London, Shannen Doherty, and Joey Lauren Adams as broke-ass folks who hang out at the mall on the day that Marvel Comics' Stan Lee visits. But with less people shopping at malls, how will Smith get his new or old characters into the mall in 2016? Have Amazon delivery drones gone haywire? Will the slacker generation experience an uptick in blindness due to the strain of vain attempts to see the sailboat in The Magic Eye posters? Or, on that note, maybe it's to buy The Dress—the Magic Eye internet trick of 2015.
