An unarmed man in his twenties was shot and killed tonight after an altercation in a downtown Brooklyn subway station. The shooter is reported to be a 69-year-old retired correction officer. The police have yet to release the identities of the parties involved.
According to law enforcement officials, the retired officer had allegedly instigated an argument with two young men while riding a southbound train. The argument escalated to the point where one of the young men spit on the retired officer. The three men were eventually separated as the train came to a stop in the Borough Hall station.
Tragically, the violence did not end there. The three men encountered one another again once they made it to the mezzanine level and another fight broke out. The 69-year-old, who was carrying a 9mm pistol, fired at least one shot, striking one of the men in the chest. The victim was pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital Center.
Investigators are currently questioning the other young man, who is 29-years-old, and the retired correction officer. Charges have yet to be filed.
