F.A.O. Schwarz is Closing Its Flagship NYC Store

Pour one out.

You have less than two months to live out your dream of dancing on the giant piano at F.A.O. Schwarz in New York City. The famous toystore, which has been in Times Square since 1986, Fifth Avenue since 1931 and New York since 1870, is closing on July 15. The flagship store is its last remaining location; the company was bought by Toys "R" Us in 2009 and will still have boutiques inside its former rival and an online presence.

According to the New York Times, the culprit is "rising rents and ultraluxury retailing in New York City’s hottest shopping district." Toys "R" Us said in a statement that it's committed to keeping F.A.O. Schwarz in Manhattan and is actively scouting for a new location, though the Times says it's unlikely anything would open before 2016.
