Keeping a lid on all the surprises in a superhero film while still doing press is a heroic feat unto itself. You never know what little detail will incidentally spark the rabid comic community's collective Spidey sense, and soon a side comment becomes a spoiler. That's the situation Michael Shannon may have just created for himself in his latest interview with Vulture, while recounting an anecdote about being stuck in a port-a-potty while on-set for Batman v Superman, no less. It's why he got stuck that sparked interest:
So I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder, the director] being like, 'Where’s Shannon? Where the fuck is he?' and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, 'Let me out of here!'”
Shannon can be seen in the latest Batman v Superman trailer, his corpse as lifeless as Supes left him at the end of Man of Steel. But wtf is he doing on set sporting flippers??? You don't have to be a comic nerd to assume that Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor will study Zod's corpse for more insight into defeating Superman. Meanwhile it's been all but officially confirmed that Doomsday, the alien behemoth who kills Superman in the comics, will also factor into the movie. Put those two together, with the new information about Shannon's Zod flippers, and you have the current fanboy theory that Zod will actually become Doomsday, at the hands of Lex Luthor's tinkering.
It's highly probable and narratively economic in the way that superhero movies tend to favor. But it's also problematic. I myself am not one of those knowledgeable fans who balks at every page-to-screen change, but in the comics Doomsday is this big, hulking beast (not to mention, a completely different entity and villain from Zod altogether). If Zack Snyder's portrayal of him in film is just a re-animated Michael Shannon with like, CGI zombie-eyes, paler skin and webbed hands, not only is that lazy, but this movie may end up sucking even more than I originally thought.
