There remains little argument as to the brilliance of Danny Boyle's 1996 film Trainspotting, though the debate surrounding its potential sequel has rarely subsided in the nearly twenty years since its release. Currently in the beginning stages of most certainly taking over the world with Steve Jobs, director Danny Boyle decided a recent interview with Deadline was as good a place as any to reveal that his next project is that long overdue Trainspotting sequel:
“All the four main actors want to come back and do it. Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together, which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”
John Hodge, who wrote the screenplay for Trainspotting, will also return with a script based on Irvine Welsh's Porno, the literary follow-up to the 90s heroin classic. As noted by Collider, the debate surrounding a Trainspotting sequel was mostly kept alive due to a falling out between Boyle and star Ewan McGregor stemming from casting choices on the director's 2000 film The Beach. However, McGregor and Boyle have since buried any related hatchets following Boyle's admission in 2013 that he "didn't treat [McGregor] very well."
McGregor is presumed to be joined in the sequel by fellow day-ones Jonny Lee Miller, Robert Carlyle, and Kevin McKidd (whose character actually dies in the original film). Though Boyle specifically mentioned the inclusion of "four main actors," that number could / should balloon to also include Ewen Bremner and Kelly Macdonald.
