Chloe Moretz is best known for dark roles like Carrie in Carrie, a Russian Mafia kidnapping victim in The Equalizer, and Hit Girl in Kick-Ass, so it makes sense that she'll star in a live-action version of The Little Mermaid. This version, directed by Richard Curtis of Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral fame, will be a far cry from Disney's happily-ever-after Ariel-and-Eric story. Instead, it will be based on Hans Christian Andersen's original fairytale, in which the mermaid (who simply goes by The Little Mermaid) dies in the end, washed away by the waves.

Director Sofia Coppola was originally tied to the project, but she left earlier this year, citing "creative differences." According to Variety, "insiders" say Coppola left because she wasn't a fan of Moretz—maybe she thought Moretz would lock her in a closet with mind-control powers or drown her in pig's blood? For now, Moretz is wrapping up Brain on Fire and filming Neighbors 2: Sorority Rush—The Little Mermaid has yet to be assigned a release date.
