With the news that Marvel could be getting its first queer lead in Jessica Jones for the soon-to-premiere Netflix series starring Krysten Ritter (which kicks off with a great first episode, FYI), comes news about Marvel’s upcoming Ryan Reynolds-starring Deadpool where the titular character will be pansexual.

Pansexuality is defined as a person’s attraction to someone else of any sex or gender, whereas bisexuality is an attraction to men and women, and homosexuality is an attraction to someone of the same sex. This of course is not a complete rundown, but a small LGBTQ lesson. Marvel’s “Merc with a Mouth” has been described as pansexual in the comics before, but in an interview with Collider,Deadpool director Tim Miller explicitly said the trickster would be pansexual in the film when asked if he would be hypersexualized.

Reynolds talked about that hypersexualization telling Collider, “You kinda think you have moments when you’re shooting where you think, ‘This is, uh, a little excessive. This is a comic-book movie. Are we gonna get away with this?’ But so far so good. Studio hasn’t crushed us with anything.”

There you have it. Expect Deadpool to sex up the big screen when he hits theaters in February of next year. Let’s hope Marvel continues to seek more diversity for its films, while being genuinely inclusive.
