Anonymous, the hacktivist collective most recently linked to a united effort aimed at taking down Donald Trump, has now reportedly declared a "cyber war" against Turkey in response to alleged "financial and logistic support" of ISIS. In a video posted earlier this week, the group appears to take responsibility for a recent week-long Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on a large number of Turkish websites. The attack kicked off on Dec. 14 and ultimately succeeded in taking down at least 400,000 .tr domains, reports the Hürriyet Daily News.
"Turkey is supporting Daesh [ISIS] by buying oil from them, and hospitalizing their fighters," the group states. "We won’t accept that Erdoğan, the leader of Turkey, will help Daesh any longer." Anonymous promises continued cyber attacks, including operations against government domains and banks, unless this alleged support of ISIS ceases immediately. "After the root DNS, we will start to hit your airports, military assets and private state connections," the group promised. "We will destroy your critical banking infrastructure."
Just weeks ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of being involved in some sort of "illicit oil trade" with the militant group, though Erdoğan quickly rejected such claims: "Implicating my family with these accusations is especially immoral." In November, Turkey allegedly downed a Russian jet for reportedly crossing into restricted airspace.
