Spotting sea monsters lurking in the depths of the ocean can happen anywhere from Boston—as these bros found out—to Japan where this giant squid was spotted on Christmas eve. This rare squid sighting is the second bit of animal discovery news to make waves within the past week after researchers discovered a new shark species: Ninja Lantern shark

The squid was found swimming in the Toyama Bay as onlookers watched the creature. One onlooker, Akinobu Kimura who owns a dive shop, actually jumped in the bay to follow the squid reports CNN. Kimura filmed the squid using a submersible camera. "My curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the water and go close to it," he told CNN. The squid was reportedly not an adult since it was only approximately 12 feet long while adults range from 30 to 40 feet long.

Kimura's once-in-a-lifetime experience would've scared anyone as he explained the squid tried to wrap its tentacles around him. He described the squid as looking "lively," saying it squirted ink. Kimura reportedly helped the squid leave the harbor after a few hours so it could return to the ocean.
