2003's The Manson Family was a truly grotesque picture, but an upcoming new Manson film may be more appetizing for your cinematic palate. The directing/writing duo Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner—who turned Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho into the tastefully horrifying Christian Bale-starring cult film in 2000—are back together again for the first time since 2005's The Notorious Bettie Page, this time tackling true crime.
The two are directing and writing The Family, an upcoming Manson family film told from the perspective of scholar Karlene Faith, who worked with the women in the cult and helped them break the Manson brainwashing and come to terms with the murders they committed under his influence. The film is based on Faith's 2001 book, The Long Prison Journey of Leslie van Houten: Life Beyond The Cult. Not only is the Manson story already endlessly fascinating, but Harron and Turner (yay women filmmakers!) make a promising duo, especially if they can recreate the kind of magic found on American Psycho. So excited for this, we can hardly wait.
