Looks like Rolling Stone can't catch a break—not even from a former editor. Evan Wright, a contributing editor for the magazine who wrote from 2000-2005, spoke about the current state of Rolling Stone following Sean Penn's bizarre interview with Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.
Speaking to TheWrap, Katz went on to say that the interview published in Rolling Stone is bad news for the publication. "The reality is, based on what I know as a former contributing editor, this is an ongoing symptom of the fact that magazines can’t finance reporters anymore." It's all the worse that this is the biggest article Rolling Stone has probably had since their UVA one, which caused a whole other set of problems
He then speaks about Penn's writing, making a pretty hilarious analogy. "Penn seems so seduced by his own adventure he spews out howlers like this. It’s like he’s doing the Tropic Thunder version of a Hunter S. Thompson story."
Good or bad, it's hard to argue that the interview hasn't at least captured all of our attentions.
