Considering how successful—financially and critically—Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was, it makes sense that Zack Snyder, the director of the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, would want Nolan's blessing before proceeding with the DC film.
In an interview with Empire, Snyder spoke about taking on the movie, which stars Henry Cavill (who appeared in Snyder's Man of Steel) as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman. Apparently it wasn't so easy for Nolan to move past the character, played by Christian Bale in all three of his films.
"You tell me if you don’t want me to do it," Snyder said to Nolan. After a pause Nolan said, "Well, we don’t own these characters. When you’re done making Batman movies, someone else will [make them]."
If I were Snyder I definitely wouldn't feel too comfortable after such an icy and bitter comment, but I guess Nolan did sign off on it—sorta. In his defense, it can't be easy watching someone else take the reigns of something you worked really hard on.
Then again I'm not Snyder, who, evidentially wasn't too discouraged by Nolan's ambivalence. "I think he found it a little bit hard," Snyder admits. “I would feel the same way."
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released to theaters on March 25. In addition to Cavill and Affleck, it will be Israeli actress GalGadot's debut as Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman will be getting her own film in 2017.
