Former Toronto mayor Rob Ford died Tuesday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Ford was diagnosed with pleomorphic liposarcoma in September 2014 after a tumor was found in his abdomen. The Toronto councillor and former mayor endured nine rounds of chemotherapy, plus surgery and radiation treatment at  Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto since his diagnosis. Earlier this month, his chief of staff confirmed that Ford has not responded to the latest chemotherapy treatment.

Ford – who served as Toronto’s mayor from 2010 to 2014 – shocked Torontonians after Gawker went public with a story alleging its editor had seen a video showing the controversial mayor smoking crack cocaine. The mayor initially called the allegations of drug use, "ridiculous" before months of high-profile antics made headlines around the globe. In 2014, Ford went to rehab to seek help for his "problem with alcohol" -- and after a 2 months, he returned to Toornto to continue his term.

A statement from Rob Ford’s family, confirming his death:

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the Ford family announces the passing of their beloved son, brother, husband, and father, Councillor Rob Ford earlier today at the age of 46.

Rob Ford died at age 46 at Mount Sinai hospital, surrounded by his family. Ford is survived by his wife and 2 children.
