J.K. Simmons, a.k.a. the greatest drum instructor of all time, is heading back to the lucrative world of comic book adaptations. However, in a move that may surprise anyone who still fondly remembers Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, the Oscar-winning Whiplash star is joining the DC ranks as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League.

The film, which is being split into two blockbusters for maximum longevity, follows this month's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as an expansion of the DC cinematic universe. Like Batman v Superman, Justice League: Part One and Part Two will be directed by Watchmen mastermind Zack Snyder. Part One, as previously reported, is set to begin production in just a few weeks. The film—set for release next November—also stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ben Affleck's unfortunate back tattoo.

"The idea that we could begin to boot up a Justice League concept was a cool thing," Snyder, who is already hanging around the UK in preparation for the shoot, told Entertainment Weekly in February. "It was a little bit of an 'about time' moment, and I don’t blame [the studio] for feeling that way, because it’s a long time coming." Though Snyder did not elaborate on the presumed difficulties of working with Ben Affleck's unfortunate back tattoo, he did admit that the very idea of Justice League is "a bit of a creative hurdle."

With J.K. Simmons (a.k.a. J. Jonah Jameson) aboard, Justice League should manage those hurdles just fine. And if not? Well, at least we have Ben Affleck's unfortunate back tattoo to blame.
