Remember that time we broke Joss Whedon? About this time last year, the Avengers director was facing heavy criticism and impossible fanboy expectations over Age of Ultron. Many saw the Black Widow/Hulk relationship as anti-feminist, which he denied, and even more were confused about Hawkeye’s secret family. A frustrated Whedon publicly revealed his battle with Marvel executives what to keep or cut from the film and he ended up quitting Twitter shortly after. He soon kicked back for a much needed rest and we hadn’t heard much from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator since then.
Now, after some time to think, he’s stepping back into the spotlight to address those infamous Age of Ultron comments. During the Tribeca Film Festival’s "Talk" series, Whedon admitted that he isn’t ashamed of the film he made. Rather it’s the exact opposite, Deadlinereports.
"Ultron, I’m very proud of," he said. "There were things that did not meet my expectations of myself and then I was so beaten down by the process. Some of that was conflicting with Marvel, which is inevitable and a lot of that was about my own work and I was also exhausted, and we right away went and did publicity. I created the narrative—wherein I’m not quite accomplished at– and people just ran with (about Ultron) 'Well it’s OK, it could be better, but it’s not Joss’ fault' and I think that did a disservice to the movie, and to the studio and to myself. Ultimately, it wasn’t the right way to be because I’m very proud about it."
According to Deadline, he’s also not opposed to directing a Marvel film again. Perhaps he can start with Captain Marvel’s first solo venture. It’s been sitting on the shelves for long enough.
