Jon Bernthal as The Punisher in the most recent batch of Daredevil episodes, as pretty much everyone has publicly agreed, was truly a thing of Netflix magic. After rumors of a possible Punisher spin-off series starring Bernthal were both spread indiscriminately and ruthlessly denounced, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Netflix has indeed said yes to the project.

Steve Lightfoot, most known for his awesome work on Hannibal (RIP), will serve as Punisher's showrunner. The series will mark the sixth Marvel Television order for the streaming platform, an impressive roster that now includes a Peabody winnerJessica Jones. Shortly after news of the spin-off started shaking up everyone's Drake-heavy timelines, Netflix hit us with a tease:

"I don't think I would be ready to even begin to tackle this part if I wasn't a husband and a father," Bernthal told us back in March. "Until you have that, you don't really love something more than yourself, and know what it's like to give your life for somebody else." According to Bernthal, the first step toward fully embodying Frank Castle requires a dip understanding of profound loss. "It's always sort of been my philosophy in life," Bernthal added. "If something really scares you, if something really kinda sets you on fire inside, that's exactly what you need to step towards."

Earlier this year, Marvel seemed to totally squash all hopes of a Punisher spin-off in typical Marvel fashion. "I think that's something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that's actually happening," Jeph Loeb, Marvel TV's VP, toldDigital Spy in February. Damn. Guess we got played. Here's to many more years of punishing, Jon Bernthal. You earned it.
