Frustrated with the way Game of Thrones characters are always dying? There's apparently some method to George R.R. Martin's madness—and a highly philosophical one, at that. In an interview with Galaxy’s Edge, the A Song of Ice and Fire author finally answers our burning questions about why he's always killing off our favorite characters (RIP Ned Stark).

"I think a writer, even a fantasy writer, has an obligation to tell the truth and the truth is, as we say in Game of Thrones, all men must die," he responded. "Particularly if you’re writing about war, which is certainly a central subject in Game of Thrones. ... You can’t write about war and violence without having death."

Some fans still aren't happy with Martin's philosophy, though.

Pretty sure I had the same reaction! 😂😂 #JohnSnow #GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/nYGVOjwYtz

The show's current season threw viewers a bone by bringing Jon Snow back to life, though, despite actor Kit Harington's claims to the contrary. Martin may believe all men must die, but at least he doesn't think they all have to be dead for good.
