Mel Gibson is working on a sequel to The Passion of the Christ, one of the 10 Most Blasphemous Movies in History, according toThe Hollywood Reporter. Years ago a Passion follow-up was reportedly planned as a prequel.

The Hollywood Reporter received confirmation of the project from Passion writer Randall Wallace who said he was no longer able to keep the sequel a secret. Wallace told THR Gibson, who directed the first film, would be returning too. He also said the sequel will be about the resurrection of Jesus and that he's begun writing a script.

The Passion, released in 2004, followed the events that led up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The controversial R-rated film was immensely successful making $612 million at the worldwide box office from a $30 million budget. Deadpool bested it in March to become the highest grossing R-rated film of all time.

"I always wanted to tell this story," Wallace said. "The Passion is the beginning and there's a lot more story to tell." Wallace, a religion major, toldTHR he's specifically knowledgeable about the resurrection.

At an advanced screening last month for Hacksaw Ridge, a film Gibson directed and Wallace co-wrote, Gibson was asked about a Passion sequel. He replied by saying he was interested but didn't give up anything else reportsTHR.

Wallace toldTHR he and Gibson were pushed to do another film because of the demand. "The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger," Wallace said.

Of course Twitter had something to say about the planned sequel.
