Last month, we started hearing rumors that Academy Award-winning actress Brie Larson, who recently earned her own rap name "Young Brie," was the front runner to portray Captain Marvel in the upcoming standalone film. Among several exciting bits of news to come from Comic-Con, it was officially confirmed that Larson will play the role of Carol Danvers in the forthcoming Captain Marvel.

The announcement was made at Marvel's Hall H panel where Larson took the stage alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the cast of several other upcoming Marvel films, including Doctor Strange, and Black Panther, Entertainment Weeklyreports. Larson and members of the various other Marvel movie casts posed for a photo as the crowd celebrated the casting announcement.

While Captain Marvel has been portrayed by both men and women in the various comic iterations, Feige wanted to emphasize the importance of the decision to cast a woman in the lead role. "Captain Marvel has gone by many names in the comics, has had many people who’ve inhabited that costume and used that power base. I want to make it very clear: This hero’s name is Carol Danvers," Feige said at the panel discussion.

Following the Comic-Con announcement, both Marvel studios and Larson took to Twitter to share the news with the rest of the world. Larson tweeted a picture of herself wearing a Marvel Studios hat with the caption, "Call me Captain Marvel."

Considering that a majority of Marvel's superhero films revolve around male protagonists, fans are excited that Larson has been cast as Carol Danvers when Marvel Studios could have easily chosen a man for the lead.
