Even more gets from this Comic-Con weekend abound. The first official trailer for Kong: Skull Island set off a cinematic shakedown, of sorts, which has resulted in unfortunate size jokes, some positive press for an otherwise miserable Tom Hiddleston, and the slow but marked decline of John Goodman's humor.
Kong: Skull Island stars Hiddleston and Goodman alongside Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Corey Hawkins, and Jason Mitchell. The King Kong reboot follows a group of scientists and explorers who discover an island in the South Pacific during the 1970s—the last decade, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts said, that didn't have the technological trappings of the modern age. Without cell phones or popular media, some of the world's mysteries could "still exist," he said.
The franchise has long been in the works, and was initially rumored to feature an epic battle scene with Godzilla.
"Kong is film history, Kong is where genre went mainstream,” Vogt-Roberts said. “We tried to tell a new mythology. We’ve seen the beauty and the beast tale.”
The film's expected release date is Mar. 10, 2017.
