Peter Mayhew, the guy behind the classic Star Wars character Chewbacca, shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Kenny Baker on Monday. Baker passed away at the age of 81 Saturday and was most known for his portrayal of R2-D2 but, as Mayhew noted in his memorial letter, many will also remember him for his genuine and everlasting friendship.

"Kenny and I became fast friends the first time we met and formed a lifelong bond after realizing that we had so much in common," Mayhew, 72, wrote of his late friend. "Although people liked to contrast the difference in our heights, we found we shared many of the same struggles, from finding clothes, driving cars, and fitting in airplane seats to health issues and the ever constant stares of strangers; we understood each other on a level that few others can."

Mayhew added that he was "so very glad" he was able to see Baker in London earlier this month, praising the beloved actor's "wicked sense of humor" and limitless talent. "In the decades we knew each other, I never met anyone who enjoyed the public more," Mayhew wrote. "For all the joy he brought this world on screen and off I give my thanks, and a final farewell to my little friend with the giant heart who's gone to [sic] soon."

Back in March, another famous creative force behind the R2-D2 character passed away. Tony Dyson, the man credited with building the R2-D2s used in the Star Wars franchise, died at his home on the Maltese island of Gozo at the age of 68. Dyson was also involved with the burgeoning drone development startup Green Drones, whose goal was to harness drone technology to enable the saving of human lives.
