UPDATE 09/01/16:

In a move that should surprise no one, Netflix has officially decided to renew Stranger Things for a second season. The renewal was slyly confirmed by the mysterious YouTube clip above, putting the fears of those who somehow thought a smash hit series would not return for more smash hit vibes to rest.

The Duffer Brothers will be back as writers and co-showrunners on the second batch of Stranger Things, Varietyconfirms. They will also executive produce the series alongside season 1 vets Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. While the first batch of Stranger Things spanned 8 (great!) episodes, season 2 will continue the story across 9 (presumably just as great!) episodes.

The series stars Winona Ryder and is beloved for its heavy 1980s vibes, which owe as much to classic Stephen King as they do Steven Spielberg. The first season saw the disappearance of a young boy turn an entire town upside down, ultimately resulting in some serious top-secret government revelations and what should easily become this year's trendy new baby name: Eleven.

The Duffer bros hit up IGN in early August to expound on their plans for a then-theoretical second season of Stranger Things, teasing the fates of fan favorites Barb and Dr. Brenner. "Barb will not be forgotten," Matt Duffer said. "We'll make sure there's some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn't seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We're just not spending any screen time on it. It's not like her parents are like 'Oh Barb left. She died!'"

A casting breakdown obtained by the Hollywood Reporter Thursday reveals that the Duffer brothers are looking for "at least 3 actors" to hop aboard the series. These actors are needed for the 3 fresh characters Max, Roman, and Billy. Max and Roman will be series regulars and Billy is currently listed a "potential" regular, THR notes.

Max is described as a "tough and confident" 13-year-old female, battling a complicated relationship with her stepbrother Billy.  Max is also an accomplished skateboarder. Billy is a hella muscular and, fittingly, "overconfident" 17-year-old whose edgy vibes have everyone at school convinced he killed someone years earlier. He drinks, drives a black Camaro, and "steals peoples' girlfriends." Roman is currently listed as either a male or female character, anywhere from 30 to 38 years of age. The character is an outsider who grew up homeless alongside their drug-addicted mother.

The new season will pick up just shy of a year after the events of the first season, with shooting scheduled to take place in Atlanta from October to April.

Stranger Things returns in 2017.
