The latest trailer for Justin Kurzel's cinematic take on the Assassin's Creed franchise arrived Tuesday, once again showing this might be a rare example of a video game adaptation not totally blowing it. Though this glimpse at the film would suggest that Kurzel is going to spend a lot of time in the present, we're still pretty hopeful the period piece vibes of the source material will be rightfully honored.

Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs, X-Men: Apocalypse) stars as Callum Lynch and Aguilar de Nerha, joining Marion Cotillard (Allied) and Michael K. Williams (The Wire) for two hours of expensive-looking Templar Order shenanigans. Fassbender chopped it up with Collider in May about flipping the beloved video game into a possible movie franchise, revealing he has long been passionate about doing the Ubisoft series justice on the big screen.

"[What] I liked about it is that it's a lot like Star Wars; you have the dark side and the light," Fassbender explained. "Both of these factions, they contradict each other all the time, they contradict themselves all the time. They are hypocritical, as well, of their beliefs—and I thought that was cool. So morally, it's a very gray area that both of them are working in and I thought that was unusual for this sort of type of film, and also a lot more interesting."

See if that Star Wars comparison makes any sense when Assassin's Creed hits theaters Dec. 21.
