The second presidential debate between Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and apparent GOP candidate Donald Trump was, perhaps, the most depressing televised discussion in decades. Trump, fresh off his repeated (and offensive) "locker room talk" defense of the Washington Post-obtained 2005 audio of him boasting about grabbing women "by the pussy," continued to escape actual policy discussion by way of deflection while sending fact checkers into overdrive. Sadly, John Oliver taped this week's Last Week Tonight before the debate took place. Oliver, however, had plenty to say about that Trump and Billy Bush tape.
"Yes, that is audio in 2005 of Donald Trump telling a giggling Billy Bush that one of the perks of fame is he can grab women's genitalia without permission," Oliver said after showing a clip of the footage. "Let me just remind you that, last Sunday, I told you that if you looked above the clouds, you would see rock bottom. But if you look up there now, just way up there, all the way up high, you will see right up in the distance where we were this time last week. Since then, we have sunk so low we are breaking through the Earth's crust."
Oliver didn't let Bush off easy, either, noting that he suggested Trump get a hug when the two walked off the bus, post-"grab them by the pussy" brag. "Incidentally, fuck Billy Bush," Oliver said. "Fuck him. Fuck him! It's gross enough that he's serving as Donald Trump's hug pimp, but he said 'How about a little hug for the Bushy,' which, if it is not already, should be a felony offense in all 50 states."
A major part of Trump's defense of the derogatory remarks has been that this is somehow just "locker room talk" and something actual people do in "the real world." That defense, Oliver noted, is perhaps the most depressing part of this whole shit show. "I'm genuinely disappointed to hear him say we are living in the real world," Oliver said. "I secretly hoped this whole election was a horrible dream. Not even my dream, but the dream of a racist teenager who fell asleep masturbating to internet porn."
