After a contentious and very public divorce from actor Johnny Depp, Amber Heard recently released a public service announcement detailing her allegations of domestic abuse during their 15-month marriage. The PSA was released in conjunction with the multi-media project #Girlgaze, and features Heard tearfully reflecting on her past experiences with domestic violence.

“As a woman having gone through this on a public stage…in the public arena that I did it in, I have a unique opportunity to remind other women, ‘This doesn't have to be the way it is,’” Heard said. “You don't have to do it alone. You’re not alone.” Heard thanked the women in her life who supported her and urged for change in how the public and the media discuss the issue of domestic violence.

Heard and Depp married Feb. 3, 2015. Heard accused Depp of domestic violence, and multiple media outlets circulated photos of hear with bruises she alleged were related to an incident with Depp. A video of Depp confronting and swearing at Heard was also made public. The pair divorced in August of 2016. Heard filed a restraining order, both parties reached a settlement agreement, and Heard withdrew allegations that Depp abused her.

Per publicly released terms of the divorce settlement, Depp agreed to pay $7 million. Heard subsequently announced she would donate the entire settlement amount to charity. Various news sources report Depp and Heard’s attorney’s disagreed over Depp paying the $7 million directly to Heard or the charities she specified, as the latter would entitle Depp to a tax break.
