Deadpool, one of the few good things 2016 has given us, was a real motherfucker to make. In fact, the whole ordeal gave star and producer Ryan Reynolds "a little bit of a nervous breakdown." Because fate or luck or whatever apparently has a decent sense of humor, the inevitable sequel to the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time has already hit one noteworthy speed bump on the path to existence: the loss of OG director Tim Miller.
Reynolds, speaking toGQ for its "Men of the Year" issue, has finally broken his silence on Miller's exit. Though initial reports cited the split as stemming from "creative differences," Reynolds kept it decidedly civil when speaking about Miller leaving the production. "All I can really add is that I'm sad to see him off the film," Reynolds said. "Tim's brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did."
Reynolds still has fond memories of pushing Deadpool to the finish line, including his collaborative relationship with Miller. "I'm not gonna go and sit with Tim Miller and say, 'The visual effects of Deadpool need to be done this way,'" Reynolds told GQ. "The man is a visual-effects wizard. But there are character and tone things that I know really well. And I've also been with this thing the longest out of anybody, aside from the guys that wrote the comics. Eleven years I've been trying to get this Sisyphus rock up the hill, and it kept rolling back on top of me. So I'm gonna be all the fuck over it from the moment it starts to the moment it finishes."
Deadpool 2, which has also recently lost its composer, is set to begin production early next year ahead of a 2018 release date.
