Starship Troopers defenders may want to start celebrating the 1997 cult classic's 20th anniversary a little early, as the movie is now being primed for a reboot. R-rated Baywatch reboot writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon have been tapped to pen the script for what studio bosses are hoping is the first of many in a completely relaunched franchise, the Hollywood Reporterannounced Thursday.

The original Starship Troopers proved critically divisive upon its release, with its satirical flourishes striking fervent fans as totally brilliant and hardened detractors as the exact opposite. Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards, and Neil Patrick Harris starred in the film but mostly shied away from the ensuing string of direct-to-video sequels until Casper bit the bullet and returned for Starship Troopers 3: Marauder in 2008.

Unlike director Paul Verhoeven's 1997 hit, the new Starship Troopers is said to more closely resemble Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 science fiction novel of the same name. According toTHR, the team behind the reboot wants to present an "all-new take" on Heinlein's work. Not a single soul, not even Casper Van Dien, is expected to be involved in the Troopers revival.

Swift and Shannon's names should ring multiple bells for anyone who pays attention to movie credits, as the frequent collaborators have a slew of familiar properties on their combined resume including Freddy vs. Jason, Friday the 13th, and that aforementioned R-rated Baywatch reboot starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron.

Wait! Here's an idea: Somebody call The Rock and see if he's down for some starship trooper-ing.
