The Walking Dead, for all its flaws in recent seasons, still remains the biggest damn show on TV. But what happens when the team behind AMC's network-defining blockbuster finally decides to cool it with the weekly sadism? Fans have been speculating over a possible Walking Dead movie for years now, something showrunner Scott M. Gimple believes is now pretty much a given.
"That question comes up every now and again," Gimple toldComic Book Friday. "I'm sure one way or another, one day, it'll happen. I think it would be cool." Though Gimple doesn't currently possess any specifics on this inevitable Dead movie, he does have some seemingly tongue-in-cheek ideas for a cast. "William Shatner as Rick," Gimple said. "We'll get Edward James Olmos as Daryl. Hit all the big shows! Matthew Fox as the Governor!"
This is great news for Dead fans and not-so-great news for satirical horror legend George A. Romero, who just last month doubled down on his disdain for both Gimple's show and World War Z star Brad Pitt. "The Dead are everywhere these days," Romero told the Hollywood Reporter when asked for his assessment of AMC's franchise. "I think really Brad Pitt killed it. The Walking Dead and Brad Pitt just sort of killed it all."
For Romero, what's missing in the current crop of zombie entries is the message. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm content to wait until sort of zombies die off," Romero said. "My films, I've tried to put a message into them. It's not about the gore, it's not about the horror element that are in them. It's more about the message, for me. That's what it is, and I'm using this platform to be able to show my feelings of what I think." So, um, don't expect Romero to be sliding into the director's chair for this Dead movie.
