The '21 Jump Street' spin-off will focus on two women, both of whom happen to be cops, as they try to do undercover stuff.

For those of us who couldn't possibly care less about the complications of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's 21 Jump Street. The perfectly tongue-in-cheek 2012 comedy (and its meta AF sequel) has now blossomed into a full-blown franchise, with Deadline reporting Thursday that Sony has tapped Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping producer Rodney Rothman to script and direct the previously reported all-woman 21 Jump Street spin-off.

In addition his production work on the supremely underrated Popstar and Jonah Hill's Get Him to the Greek, Rothman penned the script for 22 Jump Street and was a writer during the David Letterman era of CBS' Late Show. His latest draft of the currently entitled spin-off was reportedly turned in this week.

Initial reports, like this 2015 one from the Wrap, had Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs on board for what was then described as a "female-driven" spin-off. Whether Rothman is working from a prior draft, instead of starting entirely from scratch, hasn't been clarified. Deadline's report noted that the film is still in its "early days," meaning any number of changes could have been made in the months since spin-off rumors kicked into overdrive.

Elsewhere in what I guess we can now call the Jump Street Cinematic Universe, another compelling chapter is being written. As we (and many others) enthusiastically reported back in April, MIB 23 is a real thing that's actually happening. The movie, a seemingly too-good-to-be-true 21 Jump Street and Men in Black crossover, is expected to star Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, i.e. not Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
