Matthew McConaughey seems like the kind of guy you would definitely want to share a blunt with. He does not, however, seem like the kind of guy who's prepared to let the ghost of True Detective find peace. During a recent pop-in on the Rich Eisen Show, McConaughey once again declared himself ready and available for a third season of the once-great HBO series.
"That conversation you and I had caught wings, because I hear that all the time now, 'So you said you're going to do season 3, when is it coming?'" McConaughey told Eisen, referencing a previous conversation about returning to the darkness of underrated philosopher Rustin Cohle. "That ball has not advanced at all. I've talked to the creator Nic Pizzolatto who's taking a little break from it. But again, if that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second."
Kind words to be sure, but the perplexing failure of True Detective season hasn't exactly subsided with distance. Even HBO programming boss Michael Lombardo practically admitted defeat way back in January, telling the Frame the blame falls on the inherent shittiness of time crunches. "Well, you know what? I set him up," Lombardo said. "To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse. And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore."
The final word: True Detective season 3? No thanks.
