Tom Cruise Shares First 'Mummy' Reboot Teaser Featuring Plenty of Gods and Monsters

Tom Cruise is rebooting 'The Mummy' with some help from Russell Crowe and Jake Johnson.

Tom Cruise tweets? Apparently so. The Austin Powers in Goldmember star tweeted an extremely brief tease of next year's Mummy reboot Thursday, giving fans a glimpse at said mummy doing mummy stuff alongside his co-stars Russell Crowe and Annabelle Wallis. In just 15 seconds, we are inundated with images of fast running, a perturbed Crowe, and the promise of a "new world of gods and monsters."

The film, a reboot of the Brendan Fraser trilogy that kicked off back in 1999, is directed by Alex Kurtzman (Cowboys & Aliens) from a script by Jon Spaihts (Passengers). As Collider explained earlier this year in more detail than I ever could, Universal is prepping Cruise's film as the first installment of a larger Universal Monsters Universe. The plan is to beef up the studio's collection of modern monster movies in much the same way as Marvel, whose own cinematic universe is now mind-bogglingly dense.

This rebooted Mummy, also starring American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson's Courtney B. Vance and New Girl's Jake Johnson, hits theaters June 9, 2017. Should we start expecting another Scorpion King spin-off with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson?

*Checks IMDb* Oh shit, they're still making direct-to-video Scorpion King sequels? Nevermind.
