Why Do White People Keep Confusing 'Hidden Figures' and 'Fences' at the Golden Globes? (UPDATE)

Michael Keaton mistakenly referred to “Hidden Figures” as “Hidden Fences,” and Twitter couldn't handle it.

UPDATE (1/9/16): Following last night "Hidden Fences" fiasco and subsequent backlash, Michael Keaton and Jenna Bush Hager have both issued apologies for conflating Hidden Figures and Fences, both black films. Hager issued her apology during Monday's Today show broadcast. "If I offended people, I am deeply sorry," she said. "It was a mistake. Y’all know I am not perfect. I am authentic, but a human. What I didn’t wanna do do was make anybody feel lesser than they are."

Keaton's apology came courtesy of TMZ, which caught up with the actor following the awards ceremony. "Let’s make this official: I’m sorry, I apologize. I screwed it up," he said, while brushing off the backlash from the flub.

The film Hidden Fences is generating a lot of buzz at tonight’s Golden Globes. Which is pretty awkward considering it doesn’t exist.

During the awards show Sunday night, Michael Keaton took the stage to present the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. When he announced Octavia Spencer’s nomination for Hidden Figures, he mistakenly referred to the movie as Hidden Fences. As most of you know, Hidden Figures tells the story of three black women who worked at NASA during the 1960s, while Fencesis a film adaptation of an August Wilson play starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Clearly, having multiple movies led by a black cast is confusing to some. And if you thought this was a one-time incident, think again.

While interviewing Pharrell Williams on the Golden Globes red carpet, Jenna Bush brought up his nomination for Best Original Score. And, just like Keaton, completely screwed up.

"So you're nominated for Hidden Fences," she asked the Pharrell, who was visibly shook by the mistake.

Naturally, Twitter had a lot to say about these blunders. You can check out some of the reactions below.

And now this is happening:

Never change, Twitter. Never change.
