Jimmy Kimmel opened up about the recent birth of his son, Billy, on Monday. Kimmel returned from a week off with a touching 13-minute monologue, revealing that Billy was born with a heart disease and had to undergo open-heart surgery at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles last month.

"A little over a week ago, on Friday April 21st, my wife Molly gave birth to a baby boy," Kimmel told his audience. "His name is William John Kimmel. We call him Billy. It was an easy delivery. Six pushes [and] he was out, and he appeared to be a normal, healthy baby until about three hours after he was born." Then, Kimmel said, a "very attentive nurse" at Cedars Sinai noticed the baby had a heart murmur and an alarming "purple" discoloration.

Jimmy and Molly McNearney's son was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit, at which point another nurse checked him out before calling in a doctor. "They determined he wasn't getting enough oxygen into his blood, which, as far as I understood at the time, was most likely one of two things: either his heart or his lungs," Kimmel said. Following an x-ray and the arrival of a pediatric cardiologist, it was determined that Billy was born with a heart disease in which the pulmonary valve was completely blocked. "He has a hole in the wall between the left and right sides of his heart," Kimmel said.

The couple's baby then underwent successful open-heart surgery at Children's Hospital. In three to six months, Kimmel added, his son will be taken in for another surgery. A third (and noninvasive) surgery will be required in the child's teen years. "Poor kid," Kimmel said. "Not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face." Billy is now home with his family, and Kimmel is thankful for the assistance of medical professionals and the support of his friends and family. "Even that son of a bitch Matt Damon sent flowers," Kimmel joked. Kimmel also criticized Trump's proposed National Institute of Health funding cuts.
