'Wonder Woman' Repeats as No. 1 Movie at the Box Office, 'The Mummy' Limps Through Opening Weekend

The DC universe's leading lady was the biggest star in theaters yet again, with Wonder Woman taking home top honors in its second week at the box office.

After breaking records for a female-directed movie during its opening weekend at the box office, Wonder Woman pulled in another $57.2 million domestically in weekend two. All told, the summer blockbuster has already earned $205 million at the box office, surpassing the film's estimated $150 million budget within its first two weeks of release.

The film's second week represents just a 45 percent drop-off from the opening, which compares favorably to the industry average of a 50-60 percent decline in week two. That puts Wonder Woman in a fairly exclusive club. There have only been 46 movies to open with $100 million or more in their opening weekend in the last 15 years, and only five of those movies dropped 45 percent or less. Wonder Woman now stands alongside Star Wars: The Force Awakens (39 percent), Spider-Man (37 percent), Shrek 2 (33 percent), and Jungle Book (40 percent) as a modern second-weekend power.

Leading lady Gal Gadot took to Twitter earlier in the week to express her gratitude to everyone who came out to see Wonder Woman, thanking fans for what she called the, "craziest weekend in my life."

To my fans. Thank you all, I love you all so much 🙏🏻😘💋 תודה,

Wonder Woman was expected to deal with a strong challenge from the reboot of The Mummy, but the Tom Cruise-led project stumbled out of the gate, earning just over $32 million at the domestic box office. In a vacuum, that would be a disappointing weekend for a big-budget action movie like The Mummy, and it's made even worse by the fact the film is supposed to jumpstart a series of "Dark Universe" monster movies for Universal. The next film in the universe, a remake of 1935's Bride of Frankenstein, is expected to release in February 2019.

Next week the field gets more crowded, with Pixar's Cars 3 and the Tupac Shakur biographical drama All Eyez on Me joining the field. Wonder Woman may not be able to turn in another No. 1 week, but it has already proven it has serious staying power.
