How Do Canadians Really Feel About Rolling Stone's Justin Trudeau Cover?

To say the Rolling Stone magazine’s latest cover and feature on Justin Trudeau has attracted ridicule would be an understatement. Not only is the headline actually “Why can’t Justin Trudeau be our President?” but the article is full of thinly veiled comparisons to Donald Trump and his controversial policies. The article is also riddled with mistakes that make it seem like it was written by someone who just discovered Canada was a country when he was assigned the piece.

Mistakes include calling the Liberal party the “Liberty Party” and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police the “Royal Canadian Mountain Police”. These mistakes would have been easily caught with a quick fact check, but Rolling Stone isn't exactly known for its quality fact checking anymore (source: the now discredited, infamous UVA rape story).

There’s no shortage of cringe-worthy lines either, including but not limited to:

  • “For Trudeau, listening is seducing.”
  • “His dark hair is a color found in nature.”
  • “His sleeves are pushed up, his tie blue, his shirt white, his socks festooned with moose.”

There have been plenty of Trudeau features in the last couple years, plenty of comparisons between him and other world leaders, and plenty of articles admiring his good looks and endless charm. But this one seems to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. Canadians are over the way Americans pine after Trudeau and might actually think he’s becoming a little overexposed.

When you have someone like Donald Trump running your country, it’s only natural that seeing a liberal guy like Trudeau in charge would make you a little bit envious. But he’s still not perfect (what politician is?) and the features in international magazines don’t seem to be doing him any favours back home anymore.

But we’ll probably all forget about this the next time he decides to go for a run and maybe photobomb an engagement photo shoot or take a selfie with a entire fourth grade class on a field trip or something.
