Ice Cube has always been a huge fan of the Raiders. Just last year, he produced a documentary for ESPN's 30 for 30 series called Straight Outta LA that profiled the relationship between the silver-and-black and the rise of Cube's gangsta rap group N.W.A. So when Raiders owner Al Davispassed away over the weekend, the NFL Network was quick to give Cube a call to ask him about working with the NFL legend.
"I remember him inviting me and my wife into his office [for Straight Outta LA]," said Cube, who was reportedly the last person to interview Davis before his death according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "Showing us all his momentos, all the things from the sixties and when he started the Raiders. And he had everything laid out."
Cube was also asked how he thought Davis felt about N.W.A. making Raiders gear so popular on the West Coast during the late 1980s and early 1990s. "I'm pretty sure his bank account loved it," Cube said. "We were great fans and we wore the logo well and the Raiders were winning on the field, and [it was] a beautiful thing. I think to this day we all benefitted a lot off of each other when it comes to that Raiders' image."
And, if he had to sum up Davis in one sentence? "For the most part, he's always been a player's owner," said Cube, "and a guy who's really just all about football."
