Chosen from a group of 42 applicant cities by the Bikes Belong Coalition Austin, Chicago, Memphis, Portland, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. will soon be undergoing development of more "green lanes," that is, protected bike lanes as a part of the coalition's "Green Lane" project. The national coalition was formed in 1999 by bicycle retailers and suppliers with the aim of putting more people into the seats of bikes. Focusing their combined energies on issues like federal policy and funding and bicycle promotion the Bikes Belong Coalition hopes to make bike life in the US a sweeter one, and the Green Lane project looks to be a huge step in that direction.
