After having been lobbied by Volvo to do so, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has begun a study into how best to regulate autonomous cars. Currently, only Nevada and California have laws on the books regarding self-driving cars, and those are simply to allow them for testing purposes.
After a few years of research, the NHTSA will announce guidelines for the software and obstacle detection systems that are central to autonomous vehicles.
