He's baaaaaaack! Er, sort of. More than a year after getting released by the Oakland A's—and about two weeks after a team that he was playing for in Taiwan removed him from their active roster—Manny Ramirez has inked a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers. Ramirez, who will donate his entire salary to charity, is going to join the Round Rock Express, the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate, on Thursday. And if he does well with the Express, there's a good chance the Rangers will bring him up to the big leagues to provide some power in their lineup later this season.
"I will play and I'll be ready," he said yesterday. "I only have to go and play and do well as I did in Taiwan. No commitments."
At 41, Ramirez is no spring chicken. But there's very little risk here for the Rangers. If he plays well in Triple-A and gets called up before the end of the 2013 MLB season, great. If not? No worries. We'll be sure to let you know how he's playing in the coming weeks.
